A Movie - A must see!!

Yesterday, I saw the award winning documentary, Born into Brothels.  http://www.kids-with-cameras.org/aboutus/ .

It is a story of an American photographer, Zana, went to India's red light district.  Originally, she was going to take pictures of life of prostitutes, but then she encountered kids who lives in the brothels.  The focus was shifted.  She then gave each of these 8 kids cameras  and taught them the technique of taking photo.  Zana wanted to help these 8 kids to get education, otherwise, they would become punks or prostitutes in the near future.  She admitted that she is not a social worker but she just wanted to help.  She got all of the kids admitted into schools (it was not easy, because there are very few schools would take kids whose parents are criminals and being a prostitute is against the law).  In the end, only 2 stayed in the schools, all others left school either based on their own free wills or relatives took them out of the school.

A sad story indeed, but one of the kids who stayed in the school, Avijit, who was 11 in 2003, is a talented artist.  This year, he was accepted into NYU's Tisch program.  In the film, he showed some of the pictures and stated that some of the pictures he took were sad but you have to look at it because they are the truth.

My girlfriend who is a child psychologist told me that it is already a really good statistic that 2 out of 8 kids were saved.  In her field, most of the children she is treating will be hopeless mostly because their parents just don't care and don't have any idea how to deal with the situation.

It is a must see documentary!!  I was totally moved and have learned one thing out of this, one [kid] at a time.
