St. Lucia's Market Day in Castries

Last week, we were in St. Lucia.  It is an island with Creole, French, and English influences (France and England each occupied this island 7 times),  so I was very eager to find the cheap local food.

I thought the street vendor food was everywhere, but I was disappointed.  Local people just don't eat out so all the food establishments are catered toward tourists.  I could certainly find the good food but the price was pretty steep (think of Manhattan price,  one night, we had dinner and it costed US$80 with 1 appetizer, 2 entrees and 1 beer).

Until 4 days into the vacation, we arrived at the capital of St. Lucia, Castries, we found an alley way where all the locals having their lunch.  The alley way also leads to the market where local people come for fresh produces- egg, goat, fish, vegetables, fruits, and spices.  I bought 5 small mangos for US$1 (that's more like what I was looking for).  The pictures above is one of the vendors and you can get any  sides dishes (vegetables, mac and cheese, stir fried noodles, rice, taro roots and yam) when you order lamb stew or chicken.  Below is the lamb stew we had.  It was so yummy!!!

You can also get soup, cow heel soup.  I really wanted to try it but the temperature was 90 degree.  I had to give up.  One of the vendors sells blood sausage and fried kidney.  Locals buy small chunks of sausage and eat it like snack.  Very interesting but I did not try.
